The Correlation of Serum ZAG with Insulin Resistance in Type 2 Diabetes

Abstract


Objective To investigate the association of serum ZAG level with insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes mellitus and to investigate its potential clinical relevance as a serum marker of metabolic syndrome or obesity.Methods 166 participants were divided into normal glucose tolerance (NGT) group and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) group. According to the level of body mass index (BMI), each group was divided into two sub-groups: normal weight group and overweight-obese group. Fasting serum ZAG level was measured by using enzyme-liked immunosorbent assay. Related clinical variables were also detected. And HOMA-IR was calculated.Results The serum level of ZAG in T2DM was significantly higher than that of the NGT (t=2.228, P = 0.028). The serum level of ZAG in T2DM-OW-OB group and T2DM-NW group were significantly higher than that of the NGT-OW-OB group and NGT-NW group (P <0.05). In the group, the serum level of ZAG and HOMA-IR in OW-OB were higher than that of the NW, but there is no statistical significance. The Partial correlation analysis showed that ZAG was positively correlated with HOMA-IR, WC , HbA1c and TG in T2DM group (r=0.543, 0.442,0.385,0.437,p<0.05 respectively) ,negatively correlated with HDL-C,TNF-α(r=-0.447, r=-0.501,p<0.05 respectively). Multiple stepwise linear regression model revealed that WC (β= 0.361, P =0.023) and HDL-C (β= -0.377, P = 0.018) were significant determinants of serum ZAG levels in T2DM group.Conclusion Serum level of ZAG is increased in T2DM. It appears to be closely associated with insulin resistance and is a regulator in lipid metabolism.
