Abstract


This project aims to discover the influence of textile finishing and fabric conditioners on the handle of polyester woven fabric. 8 finishing treatments and softener were applied to the grey polyester fabric and results show that fabric handle can be variously changed. All finishing treatments can destroy the smoothness of fabric surface, however, the softener has always the tendency to recover fabric properties that have been changed by finishing.A panel was built to assess the influence of treatments and softener on fabric handle according to established protocol. 12 tactile attributes were defined, based on which the sensory profile of each sample is given. The stability and sensibility of panel can be improved by training on consensus of attributes.In order to study correlations between sensory attributes and physical parameters, mechanical properties of treated or untreated, softened or non-softened fabrics were widely investigated; the microscopic structure of fabric surface was also observed by SEM test. Many results of both aspects confirmed sensory evaluation data.Throughout PCA, 23 physical parameters were defined as the most appropriated ones to fabric handle; the conformity and relevancy of these parameters to sensory attributes were studies.Above all, within this project, the influence of textile finishing and fabric conditioner on polyester fabric handle was studied and discussed from both objective and subjective aspects. The preliminary correlations between mechanical and sensory properties have been built.
