Abstract


The financial crisis starting from the Wall Street has almost caused a whole depression of the steel industry in China. In order to reduce the negative impact of the international financial crisis on the national steel industry, China has formulated the Blueprint for Adjustment and Revitalization of Steel Industry. For Panzhihua New Steel&Vanadium Co., Ltd(PSV), it is a critical and strategic issue to review its operation and development strategies in order to respond to the national steel industry policies and the changing marketing environment, to maintain its profit gaining ability and strive toward sustainable, healthy, and stable development.Based on the core competitiveness theory, the opportunities and challenges facing PSV are discussed. Financial crisis, economic structural adjustment, energy saving and emission reduction are particularly analyzed. The SWOT approach is employed to examine the PSV’s external environment and internal competitiveness. The results show that PSV has a considerable core competitiveness, which coincides with the real sampling investigation.This paper suggests that PSV enjoys unique advantages while suffering inherited weaknesses; it faces development opportunities while confronting some threats. It is proposed that PSV should build its core competitiveness on some critical aspects, such as strategy and decision making, core resource utilization, technical innovation, branding, human resource development, and distinctive corporate culture construction.
