Abstract

Several different shapes and sizes of spinning dies were designed and made, the corresponding fibers were prepared, and their structure and properties were investigated by optical microscope、mechanical property test and fiber number. Two kinds of fiber-reinforced composite were prepared by compounding these fibers with matrix material, the properties of the composite were measured respectively by mechanical property test. The first kind of composite is fiber/PE, which is prepared only by compounding fibers with PE. The second is fiber/PE/CaCO3 composite, which is added into CaCO3 compared with the first composite. The results show that surface area of profiled die is greater than the circular when volume of them is equal. For the same shape dies, the larger the relative volume, the larger the relative surface area. The shapes of the cross-section of fibers almost maintain that of spinneret holes. But because of the existence of surface tension, the shapes of all kinds of profiled fibers tends to round. The tensile strength at break of composite is obviously higher than pure PE, so properties of matrix is reinforced by fibers. For the same volume fibers of different shapes, fiber numbers of them are roughly equal, and fracture strength of circular fiber is higher than profiled fibers; relative surface area of profiled fibers is greater than circular fiber, so performance of the matrix can be reinforced more obviously. For the same shape fibers of different sizes, the fiber number larger, fracture strength of composite is larger also, this is because actual volume and actual surface area of fiber is greater, and monofilament strength is higher, too. The addition of CaCO3 does improve the performance of the composite. When content in the composite are 5%, after surface treatment of CaCO3 can more significantly enhance properties of composite than untreated CaCO3.
