Increasing weight as the engine structure, complexity, the design parameters that affect its performance, more and more restrictions as more demanding and sophisticated parameters, while the performance of the structure requirements are getting higher. Traditional design methods have been difficult to adapt to the development of the modern structure of the specific requirements of the internal combustion engine, the use of modern methods of optimization becomes a very important significance. This paper reviews and analyzes the optimal design of development, discusses the major modern optimization methods, namely topology optimization, shape optimization, size and shape optimization of the basic theory and its application. Based on finite element analysis software and professional software HyperWorks carried out internal combustion engines optimization design method applied research. This paper selected as the representative to the sump to the body shell and solid elements, represented as the research object, using a different method of finite element modeling and optimization methods to be studied separately. For 4100QB diesel engine oil pan, after the first shell element geometry cleanup, meshing and unit overhaul establish a pan-dimensional finite element model. On this basis, the freedom modal analysis, in order to further optimize the structure provides the basis. And for the specific characteristics of the oil pan and the use of topography optimization method, the indentation ribs by rearrangement of the sump, and ultimately by improving their natural frequency of the radiation noise reduction purposes. For 4100QB engine block, first established after appropriate simplified finite element model, and then calculated using experimental modal and modal combination method to verify the correctness of the finite element model organism. In the body of the boundary conditions impose reasonable basis for the calculation and constraint modal static strength calculation and optimization of the body structure as the basis and criteria. Finally, by analyzing the topology and shape optimization method to optimize the combination of the mode and ensuring the strength requirements of the body on the basis of body weight design. Optimization method and its application of various combinations of structural design optimization of the internal combustion engine has an important significance. Practice has proved that: the modern finite element analysis techniques and modern technology combined with structural optimization method is conducive to optimizing the structure design of the internal combustion engine to improve the design quality and shorten the design cycle, reducing design costs for the future of the internal combustion engine design provides a new ideas.
