Abstract

Pure titanium and its alloys have been mainly used as hard tissue replacing materials due to their excellent corrosion resistance and strength under high acidic corrosion environment. However, toxicity of alloying elements such as Al and V and high moduli of elasticity of these alloys compared to human bone has been pointed out. So developing novel Ti alloys with much better biocompatibility and much lower elastic modulus for orthopedic implant is considered as the most efficient way to reduce the stress shielding.A new titanium alloy, Ti-34Nb-6Zr, composed of non-toxic alloying elements with lower moduli of elasticity are designed for biomedical application. mechanical properties, Young’s modulus, microstructure of Ti-34Nb-6Zr of non-toxic alloying elements were investigated in this study.Experimental results indicated thatω-phase was found inβ-phase at aging treatment. after solition treatment and aging treatment for part and strength is also increasing. Elastic modulus is almost unchangeable. Microstructure of alloys is basicallyβ-phase andα-phase, which is become main reason of lower moduli of elasticity.and the elastic modulus of the new alloys could have a minimum value of 11.4GPa and its maximum value didn’t exceed 20.6GPa. It is expected that these novel low elastic modulus Ti-Nb-Zr alloys, can decrease the stress shielding and prolong the implant service life. Clinic orthopedic applications of these low modulus Ti alloys are very hopeful. As a new titanium alloy, Ti-34Nb-6Zr alloy is in according with the requirements of the alloy designing principle, possesses excellent comprehensive mechanical properties, biomechanical compatibility, shape memory effect, so the application outlook is promising.
