Objectives:The goals of our study were to analysis the relationship between epilepsy and depression occurred in patients,to determine the possible factors associated with clinically significant depression symptoms in patients with epilepsy and to seek an efficient intervention in patients with epilepsy and depression. Methods:Part 1:Our study was a retrospective cross-sectional study.79 epilepsy patients were enrolled. We administered National Hospital Seizure Severity Scale(NHS3),Hamilton Depression Rating Scale for Depression(HAMD),Hamilton Anxiety Scale(HAMA) to these patients. We devide the patients into depression group(HAMD>20) and non-depression group(HAMD≤20).Investigate relationship of the epilepsy-related factors to depression, such as age, sex, education, marriage, job, epilepsy status, etiopathogenisis, duration, frequency and severity.Part 2:Our study was a randomized,double-blind,placebo-controlled trial. We randomly devide the patients into Wuling group(n=16) and placebo group(n=16).All patients entered a 12-week period of add-on therapy.Evaluate their epilepsy severity, neuropsychological and cognitive function. Results:Part 1:12 patients with epilepsy out of 79 suffered from concurred depression(15.2%).10 patients with depression out of 12 suffered from concurred anxiety(83.3%).The results indicated that the risk factors in patients with epilepsy and depression were age, education, epilepsy frequency and severity, the regression coefficients are 0.15,1.58,0.09,0.36,respectively(P<0.05).The results also indicated that the epilepsy severity and depression severity met a linear correlation, the correlation coeffiecient is 0.404(P=0.000). Part 2:Wuling mycelia and placobo adjunctive therapy decreased the epilepsy severity, the difference between the two groups are not significant(P=0.789).Wuling mycelia decreased the anxiety level(P=0.026),which is not significant compared to the placebo group.Wuling mycelia improved the sleep quality, which is significant compared to the placebo group(P=0.019).The two groups have no effects on cognitive function. Conclusions:Part 1:The risk factors in patients with epilepsy and depression were age, education, epilepsy frequency and severity.Epilepsy severity and depression were signifant predictors of each other.Part 2:Wuling mycelia as an adjunctive treatment can improve the sleep quality, decrease the anxiety level, and have no effects on cognitive function. But it’s still lack of evidence of decreasing the epilepsy severity and depression.
