Abstract


Nonverbal communication refers to all the communicative actions beyond language. Nonverbal communication is so important that it often determines whether human interaction can be achieved successfully or not. Likewise, teacher’s nonverbal behavior is also important in the whole teaching process. Teacher’s high spiritual status, humorous speech, vivid expressions, and visual gestures are all impressive. It can strengthen the effect of verbal education and build up a good and harmonious relationship between teachers and students, so that the students are able to acquire knowledge in an easy and pleasant atmosphere; what is more, it can keep the classroom in order and enhance teaching efficiency. Therefore it is essential to conduct a research on teacher’s nonverbal behaviors and their effects on foreign language teaching.Based on the previous studies and the purposes of the research, the author carried out the research by taking 8 college English teachers and 150 students majoring in science in Shandong University of Science and Technology as the subjects. At the same time, the author distributed the questionnaires to these students and 20 teachers, with the help of face-to-face interviews with some of them. Through combining the qualitative and quantitative methods and adopting tables, the author gets the data and analyzes them in details.The results of the questionnaires and the interview show: College English teachers and students are aware of teacher’s nonverbal behaviors to some extent; teacher’s believes are not always consistent with their real behaviors; there are more positive nonverbal behaviors than negative ones in class; teachers can make use of various nonverbal signals in the delivery of information and management of class. However, insufficient nonverbal communication, and too many distracting or negative behaviors can have negative effects on classroom teaching. Meanwhile the research reveals that teachers can improve their nonverbal behaviors by learning and practicing; teacher’s nonverbal behaviors can affect classroom teaching in different aspects which include teacher-student relationship, classroom atmosphere, students’ participation and their cognitive learning.Based on the analysis of the results, the author proposes some tentative suggestions for teachers to improve their nonverbal behaviors in class in order to get a better teaching effect, such as changing the traditional teaching concept, increasing positive nonverbal signals in class, learning from some related theories and practicing after class and paying attention to the feedback from students and other teachers.
