Abstract

In China, RC shear wall structure system is mainly used in high-rise buildings while masonry structure system is mostly used in multi-storey buildings. Along with the increasing requirement in energy efficiency, resources saving and the environmental protection, the structure material and system of multi-storey buildings presents a trend of diversity, and the multi-storey concrete shear wall structure system is one of such a trend. At present, in our country’s relative standards, items referring to shear wall structure are mainly aimed at the use in tall buildings and have almost no special requirements of mechanical behaviors and design details for walls used in multi-storey buildings. Under the premise of ensuring the structural reliability, whether the existing codes and standards meet the economic requirements and the design methods are reasonable or not, which needs to be further studied. The subject of "The structure behavior research on RC-shear walls in multi-storey buildings" was generated in such background. This paper is a part of the study of the subject. In particular, it focuses on the structure behavior and failure characteristics of RC-shear walls that have lower reinforcements than that of current codes and specifications. The hysteretic characteristic under static-cyclic loading behavior of reinforcement concrete shear walls is investigated by testing eight full-size specimens of shear ratio equal to about 0.8. The ratio of axial force to the product of the concrete section area and compressive strength is equal to 0.1, which is determined according to multi-storey structures. The distribution reinforcement ratio of the RC-shear walls, both in horizontal and vertical direction, is between 0.13% and 0.26%.Based on the experimental research, a non-linear analysis to the experimental specimens is made by using finite-element software, and the analysis results are consistent well with the experimental ones. Based on the experimental and analytical results, the following main conclusions can be obtained in this paper:1. The loading capacity analysis shows that the loading capacity of the wall calculated using the methods provided by existing codes and specifications is able to guarantee its security but is somewhat conservative.2. Deformation analysis shows that all walls are good at ductility and energy dissipation capacity which can meet the seismic performance requirements. And the decrease of the reinforcement ratio of the distributed bars has little influence to the ductility and energy dissipation capacity of the walls. 3. For low-rise walls, the contribution of concrete section to the shear capacity is greater than the distributed bars.4. Finite-element analysis shows that the longitudinal bars in the boundary element of the wall significantly influence the lateral loading capacity of the wall. If there are sufficient longitudinal bars in boundary element of both ends of the wall, the influence to the loading capacity of the wall is limited while changing the reinforcement ratio of the distributed bars; even if there are no distributed bars in the wall, the wall can also maintain a certain load bearing and deformation capacity from the aspect of mechanical behaviors.5. Comprehensive analysis shows that the wall in this study can fully meet the performance needs of the multi-storey buildings. This study can serve as reference for the design of actual multi-storey building construction, and also for the establishment or revision of the relative codes of our country. This study supplied a good foundation for further studies of this subject. It can be used as a reference for further study, the actual engineering design, and as well as the establishment or revision of the relative codes.
