Study on the Degradation of 2-MIB in Aqueous Solution by ZnOOH Catalized Ozonation

Abstract
In recent years, eutrophication has become a serious problem due to the discharge of domestic and industrial wastewater. Plankton such as algae blooms, which induces the significant increase of the odor-producing trace organic compounds produced in the microorganism metabolism.Lab-made ZnOOH is used as catalyst and its efficiency in removing trace organic matter-2-Methylisoborneol (2-MIB) cooperated with ozone is studied. The single ozone oxidation process is compared to O3/ZnOOH system. Factors such as ozone dose、catalyst dosage、solution pH、alkalinity、radical inhibitor and water quality difference are analyzed in detail to find those effects on catalysis activity and 2-MIB removal efficiency.Results shows that O3/ZnOOH system is good at removing 2-MIB, and the removal efficiency increases with the catalyst dosage, but when the dose rises up to 400mg, the increasing effect become inconspicuous. pH value is proved to be an important parameter for the 2-MIB removal. Without catalysis, the removal efficiency of 2-MIB increases with the water solution’s pH. The removal effect in basic water is far better than in acid solution. Though catalyst can enhance removal efficiency in acid condition, neutral or alkaline solution benefits the degradation process of O3/ZnOOH system and achieves better effect. HCO3-/ CO32- plays double roles in the 2-MIB degradation. It increases the pH value to benefit the oxidation process and inhibits hydroxyl radical (HO·) at some extent; the study indicates that though high alkalinity reduces the removal efficiency of O3/ZnOOH system, its efficiency is better than that of the process which uses ozone only, Tert-Butanol inhabits 2-MIB removal no matter with or without catalysis-ZnOOH, and this inhibition is even more obvious in O3/ZnOOH system. This result indicates that O3/ZnOOH system promote the HO·produce, and removal reaction procedure in this system follow the mechanism of hydroxyl radical reaction. Removal of 2-MIB is also effected by water quality. free-radical inhibitor tert-butyl alcohol have strong inhibition effect on single ozone oxidation and romoval using O3/ZnOOH system,and even more effective on O3/ZnOOH system, which suggests O3/ZnOOH system can stimulate the generation of HO , and also follow the reaction mechanism of Hydroxyl Radical.The difference of water quality also have effect on romoval of 2-MIB, tap water is better than distilled water in degradation of 2-MIB,and methods using single ozone oxidation removing 2-MIB has poor effcet on water from Songhuajiang River.
