Abstract


Books are symbols of the progress of human civilization, and books are spiritual food for our mind. The emergence and development of books is not only the needs of the human society development, but also an indispensable tool of delivering the spirit of human thought. Books do not only record the history, disseminate the science and spread the culture, but also promote the human material and spiritual civilization’s progress and development.This paper starts from introducing the concepts of books and related bookbinding design, plus interpreting the purpose and function of the binding design. Through the analysis of domestic and abroad history about bookbinding design development, we can derive the practical significance of the current binding design, and how to inherit and develop the excellent bookbinding art in China and abroad.Based on the specific contents of the bookbinding design - ideas, dimensions, cover, typography, illustrations and color analysis focused on the specific design, combined with the final performing media of the design which are printing materials, further analysis has been carried out regarding the thought and process of contemporary Chinese bookbinding design. Our domestic design has the characters of combining artistry together with the national traits, artistry with the market, and artistry with culture.Finally, this paper points out the developing requirements and trends of the Chinese contemporary bookbinding design, and stresses that good binding design needs the overall view mixed with local cultural and aesthetic taste.Under the circumstance of the artistic development diversity nowadays, bookbinding design has kept the pace with the times and improved its diversity catering to the readers’ improving aesthetic taste, which stresses the personalized and user-friendly design, and values the application of advanced printing technology and materials. Bookbinding design is a comprehensive package designing process, and is hexahedral and three-dimensional design. Therefore, the whole view and awareness in the binding design process need to be enhanced to emphasize the overall designing concept of the books.
