Objective: Study the expression of nm23, p21ras , VEGF and ER in breast cancer and evaluate their prognostic significance. Methods: According to our data of following up, the expression of nm23, p21ras , VEGF and ER was studied in 86 cases of paraffin embedded. breast cancer and 28 cases of breast benign diseases by immunohistochemical technique (S-P).Clinicopathologic elements and treatment factors were analyzed by chi square test(x2); log-rank test was used in survival analysis Results: Positive rates of nm23, p21ras,VEGF and ER in breast cancer were 77.9%, 87.2%, 86 % and 68.6%, respectively, and those of control group (benign breast diseases) were 32.1%, 25.0%, 57.1% and 42.9% (P<0.05). ER positive rate in breast cancer stage Ⅰ-Ⅱ, was higher than that in stage Ⅲ-Ⅳ(81.3% vs. 52.6%, P<0.05); postmenopausal ER positive rate was higher than that premenopausal (77.1% vs. 57.9%, P<O.05). The survival rate of nm23 positive patients was higher than that of nni23 negative patients (P<0.05). The survival rate of ER positive patients was better than that of ER negative patients (P<O.05). However, the survival rate of VEGF negative patients was higher than that of VEGF positive cases (P<O.05). There was no statistical correlation between p21ras positive patients and p21ras negative patients (P>O.05). Conclusion: We consider that the development of breast cancer correlate with the overexpressiQn of nm23, p2lras, VEGF and ER. nm23, VEGF and ER can be used as markers in the prognostication of breast cancer. Patients with nm23, ER positive and VEGF negative have better postoperative prognosis. Expression of ER can be used as an early marker, Postmenopausal breast cancer patient should apply more active endocrinotherapy.
