Objective: By studying the vascular endothelial growth factor ( VEGF ) , proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) expression and VEGF in pterygium and normal conjunctival tissue , PCNA correlation to explore the relationship between VEGF, PCNA and pterygium . Materials and Methods: August 2008 -2010 in April at the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University ophthalmic surgical excision of pterygium tissue samples of 35 cases , 10 cases of normal conjunctival tissue specimens . Conventional HE staining histopathological examination and VEGF , PCNA immunohistochemistry chemical examination were observed its histopathological manifestations and VEGF , PCNA expression . Results: pterygium epithelium were seen varying degrees of hyperplasia on the subcutaneous tissue fibroblast hyperplasia, increased neovascularization , perivascular inflammatory cell infiltration . VEGF in pterygium epithelial cells and vascular endothelial brownish yellow staining ; PCNA in pterygium epithelial cell nuclei , pale yellow or dark brown stain ; pterygium of VEGF and PCNA positive expression rate is 88.5% , the positive expression rate of VEGF and PCNA in normal conjunctival tissue , respectively, 20 % and 40 % ; expression of VEGF in pterygium and normal conjunctiva There were significant differences ( U = 29.000 W = 84.000 , Z = -4.205 , P = 0.000 ) ; expression of PCNA in pterygium and normal conjunctiva There were significant differences (U = 74.000, W = 129.000, Z = -2.868, P = 0.004). VEGF and PCNA expression in pterygium correlation coefficient rs = 0.599, P = 0.000 . Conclusion: pterygium pathology of proliferative lesions , increased expression of VEGF and PCNA in pterygium tissue VEGF and PCNA in pterygium expression was positively correlated , the study results suggest that VEGF and PCNA may participate pathogenesis of pterygium ;
