Abstract


Transformational grammar conveys the theory that language knowledge consists of principles universal to all languages and parameters that vary from one language to another. It is a theory of knowledge, not of behavior. Its concern is with the internal structure of human mind.This paper is on movements in high school English teaching. First, the author analyzes the theories about movements. Second, the author tries to connect the theories about movements with English teaching in high school. Last, the author carries out an experiment to test the effect of two different kinds of teaching methods. They are transformational grammar teaching method and the traditional teaching method.Movements are the cores of transformational grammar. Movements mentioned in this research include NP movement, WH-movement, and head movement.Through the introduction of movements, students can have a schematic impression about transformational grammar. The teaching of movements can solve many puzzles for students, which traditional grammar can not finish; The teaching of movements can explain many phenomena of traditional grammar; The teaching of movements can help students find it easier to learn English and then be more confident in learning English. The author carried out an experiment to test which teaching method is more effective. The result of the experiment is that the Transformational Grammar teaching method has more advantages than traditional teaching method.
