Abstract

Margaret Drabble is now regarded as a well-known feminine writer in contemporary English literature. Since her first novel A Summer Bird-cage was published in 1963. Until now, she has already created 17 novels. Drabble’s creation mainly uses the traditional and practical technique, unifies her own experience, it mainly reflects modern intellectual women’s life difficult position and spiritual demands in their growth process, in an effort to find an ideal way of life for contemporary women, therefore, her works is typical to be recognized as“feminine principle novel”by the critical circles.The thesis adopts way of reading the works attentively, and bases on feminist criticism to analysis her novels, then studies and discusses the survival dilemma and pursuing of modern intellectual women in her works. In the paper’s introduction, the thesis briefly reviews and summarizes the history of Drabble’s literary creation and the study on Drabble in abroad and inner China, and puts forward my point of view, the research methods and the values. The first chapter concrete studies“The unbearable heaviness of being: the modern intellectual women’s living conditions”. In her works, the modern intellectual women are always confronted with the pain choice between family and job, at the same time, because of the influence of patriarchal culture, they also have emotional conflicts on the relations of mother and daughter, in addition, they frequently find lonely in their life. The second chapter studies the surmounting in living conditions, which is the modern intellectual women’s pursue. Regarding the modern intellectual women, the success of work can bring the independence between economic and spirit, But as a spiritual pillar in the women’s life, the maternal love and the sisters friendship have important function, they can enrich and improve the women’s inner world, realize their living value. The third chapter concretely researches“Drabble’s life into the world: the exploration of feminine consciousness”. This part starts from the author, and combines with her works, studies the reasons of Drabble’s feminine consciousness, the progress and limitations of her feminine consciousness.As a discourse, feminist fiction is a fundamental expression of women’s spiritual development and the construction of subjectivity. It not only emphasizes the work of women writes, feminist consciousness and female characteristics, and more important is to stand“impersonal”and“non-woman”of the highly look up the meaning of human destiny. Analyzing the modern intellectual women’s living conditions and ideal way of life in Drabble’s works, they not only restore the true status of women living; but also can guide and inspire women in a positive, optimistic, healthy attitude with modern intellectual women. So that they can in a calm and rational attitude seriously their own road of life, and finally construct the normal relations between women and men.
