Abstract


David Lodge (1935—) is a distinguished contemporary British novelist as well as a critic. His works have been loved and concerned by domestic and foreign critics and readers. As a novelist who grew up after World WarⅡ,Lodge has a special sensitivity to the various types of social crisis. Based on this sensitive consciousness, Lodge’s fictions are always focusing on the various crises of contemporary society, especially in the Catholic world and campus world. For this, the crisis and rescue are the two themes of the Lodge’s novels.This thesis is divided into six parts. Part1 mainly makes a simple carding and summing-up of the introductions of Lodge’s works in China, and briefly describes the thesis objectives and entry points. Part 2 analyzes the two themes of Lodge’s novels, from the "Catholic Crisis" and the "crisis of elite culture and cultural elite". Part 3 discusses how to rescue the crises in the Lodge’s novels. Part 4 explores what kind of art forms Lodge chose to present the themes. Part 5 explores the causes of Lodge’s themes of fictions. Why are so many kinds of crises in Lodge’s novels? And why did Lodge always take attention to these crises? Part 6 reveals the realistic significance of the Lodge’s novels, and the inspiration for us.
