With the rapid development of computer technology, the Finite Element Method (FEM) is widely used in modern design. FEM is a method of high speed and high precision. The stress, strain and displacement can be obtained with the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) in the design stage. And it is convenient to modify and optimize the structure.Mining flameproof transformer is a power supply equipment for mechanization excavation equipment used in coal mine. The development and manufacture of a large capacitance and high voltage transformer have been restricted by the design of the flameproof cabinet which is a key component of the transformer. The transformer cabinet should have enough strength and stiffness, and should be able to endure the tremendous blast-force during the moment gas blasts. Traditionally, the transformer cabinet design always relies on analogy and experience. The designer can’t know the deformation of the transformer cabinet, and which may make the product disqualification, or wasting material or high developing cost, and longer designing and manufacturing cycle. Therefore, it has great significance to find a new approach to analyze and calculate the mechanical model of cabinet, check its strength and stiffness based on a certain FEM software. Thus it can improve the technique of cabinet design, speed up the response to the market requirement and reduce the cost. So far no publications on transformer cabinet analysis and calculation by FEM have been released. This paper investigated the KBSG9-3150 mining flameproof transformer developed by Hunan University and a transformer factory. The cabinet was analyzed by FEM. The major works completed mainly included: (1) The fundamentals on FEM were discussed; (2) The solid model of the cabinet was created by 3D design software SolidWorks. (3) The Nonlinear Finite Element model was built and calculated by FEM software COSMOSDesignSTAR. Through calculation and analysis, the deformation of the transformer cabinet was obtained. Meanwhile, the stress and displacement of every element were also obtained. Based on the results of each analysis, the realtime modification of the cabinet structure was achieved. (4) A new and rational checking method of the flange and bolt was suggested. In order to validate the accuracy of the result, a hydraulic test was carried out. It
