Abstract


Science and technology and human cognitive abilities are closely linked, and as an important carrier of science and technology, science and technology more and more attention by the field of linguistics in English. As a research topic of cognitive linguistics, conceptual metaphor it is from the perspective of cognitive analysis of the metaphorical nature of the language. The purpose of this paper is that the conceptual metaphor theory is introduced into the discourse of scientific English studies, and thus a more systematic analysis of scientific English discourse from the perspective of metaphor. Backtracking English for Science and Technology Research introduces the theory of conceptual metaphor, and on this basis the functions and features of scientific English discourse metaphor. Lakoff and Johnson's theory of conceptual metaphor, metaphor from a conceptual domain (source domain) that is the source domain to another concept domain (target domain), the target domain mapping. The metaphor of the cognitive basis \Lakoff and Johnson will be divided into three categories: conceptual metaphor structural metaphors, orientational metaphor entity metaphor, and they made a detailed analysis. Entire human mindset is largely metaphorical, metaphor is a very important human cognitive tools, even in the field of science and technology is a mainly abstract thinking, and ultimately, metaphoric image of thinking means. The majority of scientific English discourse sentences referenced herein metaphor structure metaphor. This article specifically on the basis of the theory of conceptual metaphor analysis of the function of metaphor in scientific English: theoretical construct function, guiding function and rhetorical function which rhetoric functions can be divided into defined function, described function, explain and classification functions. Theoretical construction feature is the science and technology workers by means of metaphor to express ideas, to create a new theory. Such metaphors insightful theoretical construct plays the role of cognitive framework. Guiding function refers to scientific research in the original data is fragmented, and there is no clear sense of the metaphor in the processing of raw scientific data can play a programmatic guidance role in helping scientists to correctly process the raw data to discover the laws of nature. Rhetorical function refers to the science and technology workers can make use of the metaphor of abstract things named, described, explained and classified scientific English discourse to a metaphor for the center to expand its meaning is coherent. In addition, compared with the metaphor of the literary works, scientific English metaphor has its own characteristics: use universal, metaphorical term to explain the details as well as the concept of openness and summarized openness. Technology language of metaphor is an important part of the human metaphorical thinking, and less vulnerable to the impact of mental culture, and provide good evidence for the study of human common metaphorical thinking worthy of further investigation. The paper is divided into six chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, the main purpose of this article and some of the basic concepts, outline the full text of the framework. The second chapter is the literature review, pointed out the inadequacies of the research in the field and a clear entry point of this article. The third chapter focuses on Lakoff and Johnson's theory of conceptual metaphor, the revelation of the theory are summarized. Chapter specific analysis of the function of metaphor in scientific English discourse: theoretical construct functional guidance function and rhetorical function. The fifth chapter discusses the features of scientific English discourse metaphor. Compared with literary metaphor, metaphor in scientific English has its own characteristics. The sixth chapter is a summary of the full text.
