Abstract


With the rapid development of science and technology, the document carrier is also changing. At the very beginning book publishing mainly relied on a single paper book, but nowadays besides paper books, there are multiple carriers including CDs, tapes and other document carriers. Books published with its accompanying CDs are becoming more and more popular. However, the increase of such books brings difficulty to a library’s management, because the accompanying CDs are much easier to be scratched and damaged by users, resulting in the termination of its life in a short time if they are circulated together with the book. But many kinds of books particularly in computer engineering, language listening, teaching or demonstration courseware, technical and reference manuals will be incomplete or useless without their accompanying CDs.How to effectively use and manage these accompanying CDs has become a new problem and challenge for libraries. To meet the actual needs of CD management at the Library of Shandong University at Weihai, the author of this paper designed and developed the information management system for books’ accompanying CDs based on his own work experience and the existing library literature management system as well as the experience of the current development situation and management model at domestic other university libraries.This paper firstly introduced the required related technique and solutions to the information management system for books’ accompanying CDs, and then analyzed the needs of the system carefully, and designed several functional modules such as the foreground search and download module, the background CD management module, the CD image upload and download module, the administrator’s management module and readers’ messages board management module. The system can provide services for releasing, searching and downloading books’accompanying CDs. Meanwhile the administrator can add, modify or delete the system records, upload in bulk newly purchased CDs, adjust the number of stored CDs and delete the data of CDs with very low utilization ratio according to the statistics about readers’ searching and downloading of the database. The realization of the information management system for books’ accompanying CDs will not only satisfy the requirements of the universities’teaching and research activities, but also enhance the library’s automation level of information and network, meanwhile improving the utilization ratio of CDs and solving the problem of CD duplication. Hence the information management system for books’ accompanying CDs attaches very great significance to university libraries’digitization.
