Abstract


With the improvement of Chinese economy, science and technology, and alsowith some famous multinational companies (MNC in short) invest in China andcarrying out R&D, R&D of MNC in China now got great development. The mostnoticeable point is MNC’s strengthening R&D collaboration with famous universitiesin China, which is the focus issue of this paper.The paper points out that foreign MNCs choosing Chinese famous university asR&D cooperators has its potential causes. The first is because of MNCs’ developingstratagem, which is drived by Chinese huge market. But in the knowledge-basedeconomy era, now MNCs aim at abundant knowledge resource in Chinese topuniversities, including advanced technology, excellent equipment and outstandinghuman resource, and the last is the pivotal. Thereby, to possess Chinese excellent andlow-cost intelligent resource is MNC’s true objective in the R&D collaboration.The paper remarks on the collaborating motives, modes and content of MNCs’R&D collaboration with Chinese universities. The paper holds that the most matureand successful mode of MNC-university R&D collaboration is joint R&D center,which centralizes other modes as an integer. The paper chooses several joint R&Dcenters in Tsinghua University as typical cases to discuss the R&D collaboration.Based on which, the paper expounds management, disposal of intellectual propertyright and collaborating details in such collaboration.The paper analyzes problems and crises in the collaboration, especially toChinese universities. To those problems, the paper brings forward some policy advice,including strengthening management of collaboration, enhancing dominant status ofuniversity, intensifying the protection of intellectual property right and promotingmore successful collaboration. At the mean time, government should use policy leverto accelerate father collaboration, and Chinese companies must improve their R&Dpower, which will benefit Chinese economy, science and technology.
