Xu-Yu Style is a literary style which was fashionable during the later period of Xiao-liang Regime among Southern Dynasty (from the third year of Zhong Da Tong on), is represented by Yu Jian wu, Yu Xin, Xu Chi and Xu Ling, whose colour is concinne, indirect, charming, delicate and fluent, and of which the main types are poetry and parallel prose. Xu-Yu Style Poetry chiefly means those concinne, indirect, charming, delicate and fluent poems of Xu Yu paternities which portray feminine features and postures, express feelings of love, sorrow and resentments, depict romantic natural scenery like wind, flowers, snow and moon, and describe good, leisurely and comfortable life.Xu Chi is the inaugurator of Xu-Yu Style whose poems show a fresh, beautiful, gentle and ethereal style as a whole, then draw the outline of Xu-Yu Style Poetry both in shape and in substance. Yu Jian wu is the first generation poet of Xu-Yu Style who optimize the poetic language from Xu Chi’s plain, clean and intelligible manner to a refined, smooth and concinne style. Xu Ling is an important, transitionary poet whose poems not only combine both strong points of Xu Chi and Yu Jian wu, and possess an elegant and lofty demeanor, but also have a distinctive, resplendent and enchanting style on this basis, indicating the change from pursuing a gentle, ethereal and comely style to placing a premium on splendor and plenty. Yu Xin crack a tidy crust of Xu-Yu Style Poetry through whose poems vividly runs a spirit of chasing novelty as well as flamboyance and splendor, plenty, fresh and alerting character. He developed Xu-Yu Style Poetry considerably ideal both in shape ( such as rules and forms of classical poem, rhetoric, etc. ) and in substance ( like bones, vital energy, style and so on. ) representing the highest achievement of Xu-Yu Style Poetry.
