Abstract


Context of language has been the basis of proper understanding of language, thus the basis of pragmatics. This article examines the intimate relationship between context and understanding in terms of modern linguistic theories, namely Cooperation Principles and Relevance Theory. However, it seems that Relevance Theory is against Cooperation Principles despite that Sperber and Wilson would hold that Grice has played the fundamental role for modern pragmatics. It is true that Sperber and Wilson has challenged some of the points in Gricean theory, on which Sperber and Wilson base their theory.Therefore, in this article, I try to analyze some language phenomena by the application of both Cooperation Principles and Relevance Theory. In my point of view, relevance is the overall principle for all language phenomena, and both cooperation and non-cooperation (breaking the maxims in Gricean theory) are the specific examples of relevance.In this sense, to adapt to context is to co-operate, which is relevant, while to choose, violate and generate context are also relevant. But the point is that each effect will be achieved respectively. Vagueness or ambiguity is created or resulted in when one party is to choose the context of an utterance in their understanding of the utterance, whilehumor is achieved when the contexts are violated, hyperbole when contexts generated.Various functions of the adaptation to context, choice, violation or generation contributes to different understanding of an utterance. In analyzing the details of the understanding, I categorize contexts into co-text, context of setting, context of culture and personal attributes in order to look into the detailed influence of understanding in communication. Besides the verbal communication, body language is also discussed in analyzing the choice of contexts.In addition, some of Chinese examples are included to illustrate the relationship between context and understanding since studying pragmatics is also the concern of the Chinese language study as well.
