Abstract


Computerization of L2 reading tests has been of interest among language testing researchers for the past 15 years, but few empirical studies have been done to evaluate the equivalence of the validity being measured in computerized and conventional L2 reading tests. In order to study various issues about the effect of mode of presentation on L2 reading test performance, the present study is carried out around cognitive ability testing in educational and psychological measurement, and reviews the non-assessment literature in ergonomics, education, psychology, and L1 reading research, and also carries out three experiments (test taker’s attitudes towards computer screen, scoring by reading from computer screen, and reading speed) to look for the insight of this issue. The findings from computerized L2 assessment were found to be scarce, and the study about this issue in China is at its very beginning stage. And, the present study raises important issues, which will be considered in future studies of mode of presentation in language testing.
