Abstract


The Song Dynasty saw the highest developing stage in the Chinese feudal society. Generally speaking, the economy in this period was very prosperous. Sichuan has also witnessed a golden age of a highly developed economy in its history during this period. The well-developed feudal economy bred a representative feudal market in Sichuan. At the same time, the special economic development path also made the Sichuan market imbued with the general character of feudal market, as well as a specific character with Sichuan characteristics. For this reason, the study of the Sichuan market in the Song Dynasty is an indispensable sector of the traditional Chinese market research.Though scholars have made great achievements on Song-Sichuan economy research, involving various aspects of Sichuan economy, such as finance, currency, agriculture, handicraft, trade, businessmen’s capital and state-operated commerce, still a comprehensive and systematic study of the Sichuan market in the Song Dynasty hasn’t been made yet.This paper attempts to give a comprehensive and synthetically study of the Sichuan market in the Song Dynasty, analyzing both on macro and micro level, presenting an abstract and qualitative demonstration, as well as a concrete and quantitative analysis. It will explore the network of Sichuan market in the Song Dynasty, its trends and the obstacles on its development. The author will also study the specific character of Sichuan market in the Song Dynasty by analyzing the special geographic location of Sichuan and the influence on Sichuan market from the Song government’s special economic policy in Sichuan. By comparing Sichuan market with South-east market in the Song Dynasty, and Sichuan market in the Song period with that of the Ming-Qing periods, the developing degree and trend of Sichuan market in the Song Dynasty was evaluated and described.
