Abstract


As a scholarly writer , Yang-jiang had written two comedies: As You Wish It and Make Reality a Make-Believe, which are important plays in Chinese modern drama history in the 20th Century. Her works were praised as "The Second Landmark" in the history of Chinese modern drama after works of the founder of Chinese modern comedy who named Ding-Xilin.This article explained the value and artistry of these works by analyzed cultural connotation of the two plays and tried to find the author’s ideologies from the two plays and some other works.The comedies of Yang-jiang exposure the ways of the world of Shanghai in 1930-40’s.The plays exposure us lively characters and their life ,while endowing some cukural connotation to it. Yang-jiang took individual as a clue, showed us overall society by the revelation of bizarre and motley .Yang-jiang focused on the life of common citizens, discussed urban culture from the standpoint of citizen .She atso discussed issues of female and culture of west and east society.Yang-jiang also achieved success in using the dramatic technique. Contrast, peripeteia ,dodge and misunderstanding, ail of these helped the development of comedies.Yang-jiang chose Self-concealing Clothes as a basic standpoint in almost every fields .She showed the ways ,but didn’t appraised it. She showed the ways of the world to us with a heart full of sympathize and consideration. From these comedies , we can realize brightness, adamancy and optimism.
