Abstract

Unequal treaties were shackles the big powers forced on Chinese people. Owing to the persistent efforts of all the previous Chinese governments and the striving of all the Chinese people to abolish the unequal treaties, China had gained partly positive results before the Anti-Japanese War, which, however, was only a meager concession of the big powers. It was not until the period of Anti-Japanese War that the Chinese Government reached tremendous achievements in the fighting against unequal treaties. The War of Resistance Against Japan was not only a great national war against the Japanese aggressors, it also favourably speeded the prossesion that helped China got away from the old international system’s unequal position . The result came from the following two fundamental reasons : one was the old world structure’s broken, due to Japan’s greed of exclusive dominating East Asia becoming visible, its contradiction with USA and Britain gradually became more acute, and finally the war was doomed to break out. The above two countries gradually walked together with China, becoming allies to fight shoulderly with China ; another was that China’s national consciousness at war was awakened marvelously, and Chinese people not only wanted to beat heavily back the invasion of Japan, but also determiningly abolished all the unequal treaties imposed to China by the West Big Powers. USA and Britain eyewitnessed the firm determination and unflinching will in the struggles China upholded her own independence and freedom, and they also came to be aware of the great strategic value. Therefore, they had to make concession to China and agreed to abolish those unequal treaties.Looked back the successive Chinese governments’ and Chinese people’s insistant struggles, and part of results gained before the War of Resistance Against Japan, the thesis is mainly discussed historical background, basic prossesion of abolishing Sino-American and Sino-British unequal treaties during the War, and the new Sino-American and Sino-British treaties’ signing facts. At the same time, the paper also objectively evaluates the historical influence of the above unequal treaties’ abolishment.
