Abstract


This thesis focuses on ellipsis errors in discourses written by Korean intermediate and advanced students. According to linguists’researches, the grammatical cohesive devices consist of grammar device, lexical device and conjunctive device. Among them the grammar device can be classified into reference, ellipsis and substation. We first give a possible definition and judging principle to ellipsis device based on former study and previous related theories. Meanwhile we try to give a brief classification and explanation to this phenomenon. In this article, we hold the view that the study of ellipsis in discourse should be carried out on the basis of different tones and voices. We analyze 150 intermediate and advanced students’composition, finding that nominal words ellipsis errors play a main part compared to verbal and clause ellipsis errors. We depict the error types of ellipsis for the students, and outline the distribution of every deviation types of ellipsis with table forms, which helps us have a general conception for ellipsis. Also we analyze the causes for the ellipsis errors. Pointing out that the main of that causes are the influences of their native languages and the incompactness of the regulations in teaching process. On the basis of the above analysis, we put forward some teaching ways.The main contribution of this article is that we can get a clear concept of ellipsis errors in narritive passages written by Korean intermediate and advanced students, which in return can help TCSL teachers explore scientific teaching strategies. The weak point of the article is that we are not able to analyze the exact reasons for all the ellipsis errors so that a further study of it is quite needed.
