Abstract


In the contemporary context, the landscape of watercolor painting in China is ever changing. Today, the shifting trends of watercolor painting surpass that of any previous generation, with dramatic improvement and development both in quality and content. This advancement, however, also reflects the various problems, conflicts and challenges of contemporary watercolor painting in China. This diversified age in the field art necessitates that we should expand our horizon, aesthetic understanding, and to improve our skills so that we can keep pace with the age and create excellent works that reflect the spirit of this age. Chinese watercolor paintings have evolved from import and absorption to innovation over a century through five different stages with ebbs and flows: the end of Manchuria Dynasty, the Republic era, the dawning of Communion era, Cultural Revolution, and the Reform period. Through various exhibitions we can clearly perceive the transition into another contemporary era. When faced with the new schools of art forms, aesthetic ideas and phenomena, we need to study everything critically while we try to innovate. These are our responsibilities and challenges. This thesis tries to give a survey of the achievements of contemporary watercolor painting in China by analyzing the difficulties and challenges through different angles. Based on the analysis of different problems, this thesis gives a synopsis of several trends of Chinese contemporary watercolor, and gives a prediction of the new trend. In order to get out of backwardness and get on the path of development, Chinese watercolor artists should realize their own strengths and weakness. The only path is to inherit the essence of the Chinese culture and to learn from other related disciplines so that we can have water color of Chinese characteristics.
