Abstract


Reading is very important in college English. In various grades of English tests, reading stands at the top of the world. Choosing suitable teaching methods to improve students’comprehension becomes one of the great important tasks for English teachers. The traditional teaching methods have some limitations. So researchers and college teachers try to find newer and more efficient methods to improve students’ reading comprehension. With the development of applied linguistics and psychological linguistics, researchers found that the schema theory has better effects in teaching reading. Schema theory is an important achievement of the psychological study of memory. Schema theory defines that readers combine their own background knowledge with the information in a text to comprehend the text in the reading process. Reading is an interactive process that the bottom-up model interact with the top-down model. No matter what kind of model is used, the readers’ background knowledge is needed. All readers carry different schemata and these are often culture-specific. Schemata here mean background information. On the one hand, readers can comprehend the delivered materials by using their own knowledge, understanding the information the words express. On the other hand readers may put their own interests, feelings, desires, morals and values to deduce and appreciate the significance that the materials convey. Finally they will produce their own points of view and draw their own conclusions.According to schema theory, teaching procedures are divided into three stages: pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading, and pre-reading tasks are often designed to build or activate the learners’schemata.This thesis introduces the definition, types and functions of the schema theory and summarizes some of the researches of schema theory and its applications to reading. The author also highlights one application example of the application of schema theory to the teaching reading.This research was designed to help college teachers achieve a better understanding of the schema theory and its effects on improving English reading. It demonstrates how such application can be carried out in teaching by doing the specific procedures.There are six chapters altogether in the thesis.Chapter One explains the background, purpose and significance of the research.Chapter Two introduces the schema theory.Chapter Three introduces the present situation of reading in China.Chapter Four introduces the application situation of schema theory in teaching reading.Chapter Five is an example of applying the schema theory to teaching reading. It gives the details of the whole teaching procedures of teaching a text. The students are freshmen, majoring in International Trade. The text is chosen from College English (Integrated Course BookⅡ, Unit Six). The title of the text is I’m Going to Buy the Brooklyn BridgeChapter six is the conclusion.
