Abstract


Hemingway is a representative writer of "Lost Generation" in the United States, andhe is also one of the most powerful writers in the world. His novella The Old Man andthe Sea, which was considered as one of his masterpieces, won the Nobel Prize in1954due to his mastery of modern narrative art. So far, much attention in China has been paidto Hemingway’s impact on Chinese Literature. These studies connect Hemingway’sworks with Chinese literary creation directly and do not care about the process andmanipulation of translation of Hemingway’s works. The influence of Hemingway oncontemporary Chinese literature isn’t from the original English texts. It is the translatedliterature, which is the real "Affected Source" text, and the relevant comments that reallymatters. But translations and comments are easily affected by cultural factors in specificperiod. So discussion about cultural contexts, translation methods, characteristics andreasons of translation and introduction could result in how and how far Hemingwayparticipates in the process of literature rheology in contemporary Chinese literature, inwhat areas Hemingway affects and how the contemporary Chinese writers accept andreflect in their creation.Owing to special context in China, the translation of Hemingway’s works suffered aseries of twists and turns. As a result, the image of Hemingway and his works changed indiachrony. This paper discusses the vicissitudes of the images of the writer and his worksand explores the complex relationships between the canon-formation and the givencultural and literary contexts in modern China in order to dig further about the impact oncontemporary Chinese literature from Hemingway on the level of extent and depth.
