Abstract


Research involving psychological reactance examines how individuals respondwhen their behavioral freedoms are restricted in a variety of situations, andpsychological reactance is considered a motivational state directed toward thereestablishment of free behaviors that have been eliminated or threatened. Previousstudies have shown that psychological reactance is both a motivational state causedby the particular situation and a stable, individual differences personality traits. Itis unfavorable to the individual’s physical and mental development when thedegree of psychological reactance is too low or too high, and a moderate level ofpsychological reactance is the most beneficial to healthy. Increasing the knowledgeof the occurrence,development, condition and influence of college students’ psychological Reactancein China, which can help us to further understand the reasons why the effects ofHealth Education and Health Promotion were not very good, and even sometimeshad the opposite effect.The research revises the Psychological Reactance Scale for Chinese CollegeStudents based on the Hong Psychological Reactance Scale (HPRS) now widely usedabroad in the field of psychological reactance measurement, and examines thereliability and validity of the new scale with the data711college students.507college students in Lanzhou were tested by Psychological Reactance Scale for CollegeStudents and Self-differentiation Scale for College Students and Mental Health Scalewith a Healthy Personality Orientation for College Students in this study, in order toexplore the causes of psychological reactance and the relationship amongpsychological reactance and self-differentiation and mental health.Through the statistical analysis of the data, the study makes the followingconclusions:1.The revised scale does not change the four factor structure of HPRS and hasgood psychometric quality.2.Generally speaking, the psychological reactance level of colleges students ismoderate, but there are still35.8percent of students whose psychological reactanceis higher. 3.The psychological reactance level of male is higher than those of female.Comparing to the Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior students, the psychologicalreactance of Senior students is highest in the dimension of “emotional responsetoward restricted choice”. The psychological reactance of college students has nosignificant differences among the aspects of college major, urban and rural, only ornot, family structure.4.College students ’self-differentiation level can significantly predict the level ofpsychological reactance. Specifically, the higher level of self-differentiation, the lowerlevel of psychological reactance.5.In the range of healthy personality, the scores of the high psychologicalreactance group in mental health and its dimensions of happy experience,interpersonal harmony, emotional regulation and courage to challenge aresignificantly lower than those of low psychological reactance group, but the scores ofthe two group in active learning and goal pursuit have no significant difference.6.self-differentiation on the one hand has a direct positive effect on mentalhealth, on the other hand, self-differentiation has a indirect positive effect on mentalhealth through psychological reactance, in other words, psychological reactance playan intervening role between self-differentiation and mental health.
