Abstract

In1940s, a wave of democratization tide swept the vast number of developing countries. In1980s, this democratization of "third wave" had been covering the vast majority of Southeast Asian countries. However, Burma, as a member of countries in Southeast Asia, is complicated. Its democratization movement always remains stagnant, the state power is firmly in the hands of soldiers, that impedes the development of Burmese politics, economy and culture. Therefore, the democratization of Burma has been paid close attention by both at home and abroad. On30March2011, the military regime’s long-running play’roadmap to democracy’concluded almost eight years after its release. In the military stronghold of Naypyidaw, President-elect Thein Sein was sworn in along with Vice-Presidents Tin Aung Myint Oo and Mauk Kham and30new cabinet ministers. The ceremony also marked the dissolution of the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC)."Peace and Development Council" offices across Burma were renamed as "General Administrative Departments." Whether the SPDC is successful in its sleight of hand depends on the resolve of international leaders to stay the course in keeping pressure on Burma’s new regime so it will enact true reform and engage in genuine dialogue for peace and national reconciliation. World leaders cannot let the regime’s mirage of democracy to continue while Burma’s people still suffer under authoritarian rule. The promise of democracy in Burma must be genuinely fulfilled. This paper takes Burma’s democratization process as the main research object, grasps the characteristics of Burma’s democratization process and existing problems through analyzing its unique political, economic, ethnic, religious and international social interaction pattern. Firstly, the democratization process in Burma will be gradually promoted by the compromise and negotiation between the military government and the opposition party. The military government will grasp the state power in Burma in a long time in the future, as the representative of the opposition party, the NLD is not ready to replace the junta’s position. Secondly, the economic development plays a decisive role in Burma’s democratization process. The great improvement of democratization process is only basis on the national prosperity, national unity and higher education level. Finally, the democratization of Burma is the result of joint action by interior and external, the influence of international society to the Burmese democratization can not be ignored. With the process of democratization pushing on, Burma’s domestic policy will appear adjustment corresponding to actual situation.
