Abstract


The issue of environment usually gets onto headlines. which impacts on many aspects of human life. Public signs about environmental protection (abbr.PSEP) can be seen even every time we open our eyes. C-E translation for PSEP is not only a part of advertisement towards outside, but also a straight window for the foreigners to get to know more about China, it is also thought to be a city card.The author travelled across many places and collected English versions about PSEP in some public places including scenic places, and found that some versions are not desireable, some mistakes such as spelling, wording, grammar or redudant sentences as well as too much Chinglish; Such signs not only give bad guidance for protecting our environment but damage China’s image. So enough attention should be attached on it.According to skopos theory, the purpose justifies the process of translating, and determines the translation methods. While we considerate the purpose of translation, the element of target readers plays a great role, we should adhere to the functions of PSEP and acceptabilty on the part of foreigners, on the basis of which we should let our translation find their right places. The author proposes three criteria for C-E translation of PSEP (target-reader-orientedness, conciseness and accurracy) and corresponding translation strategies or methods: borrowing, rewritting, frequent use of noun phrases, literal translation and etc.
