Abstract

This paper studies the narrative poetry from Han, Wei to Six Dynasties, including narrative features, structure and characterization art. The whole essay is divided into five parts.The preface is the definition of narrative poetry. In fact, the concept of narrative poetry, truly regared as an independent branch of the poetry, appeared relatively late in the history of ancient Chinese poetry. For a long time, the definition of narrative poetry is not very clear in the academic circles, so the distinction between the ancient Chinese narrative poetry and lyrics is presented firstly in this paper.Chapter 1. The discussion on the characteristics of narrative poetry from Han, Wei to Six Dynasties. (a) The new trend from the "lyrical" to "narrative" . The "Book of Songs", as the representative of the Qin Dynasty poetry, is almost lyrical, while the narrative poems from Han, Wei to Six Dynasties appeared in the new orientation. (b) Events and characters become the performance focus. The events and characters in narrative poetry of Han, Wei to Six Dynasties were no longer the carrier of emotions, but the center of the poet’s performance, which marked the maturity of narrative poetry with the difference from the lyrics in narrative structure. (c) Difference from the lyrics in "narrative" structure.Chapter 2. The studies about the art features of plot structure of narrative poetry from Han, Wei to Six Dynasties. In the way of plot structure, the short narrative poems mostly expand its narrative structure by“one-act”type through cross-section of life, while the long narrative poems organized its structure vertically by "multi-act" type . In addition, the "autobiography" structure is provided to describe their own life experience of many years. In order to make the story plot be more tortuous and more dramatic, the beginning and end of narrative poetry from Han, Wei to Six Dynasties, and its choice between simplifity and complexity in plot structure are also quite artistic, meanwhile, it also focuses on scene lay out and scene description so as to promote the development of the plot.Chapter 3. The studies on characterization art of narrative poetry from Han, Wei to Six Dynasties. Compared to "Book of Songs", the narrative poetry from Han, Wei to Six Dynasties witnessed a series of typical character, which is a major contribution to the character performance in poetry. Sharp conflict is an important way to express the spirit of characters. Conflicts are usually abrupt quickly in short narrative poems due to length constraints, while the long are manifested in multiple conflicts. The paper also discusses the use of comparing and rendering method in describing figures, and the unity and complexity of figure performances.Finally, a brief evaluation of narrative poetry from Han,Wei to Six Dynasties is provided, focusing on its historical status and impact on future narrative poetry.
