Abstract

The lateralized readiness potential (LRP) can be used to disentanglethe processes of perceptual and decision processes from motor programmingand execution. Therefore, in the present study, we utilized the ERPsapproach, in particular the LRP, to separate perceptual and decisionprocesses from motor programming and execution as causes of RT differencesbetween PE major and non-PE-major participants in the task of choicereaction. And then separate perceptual and decision processes from motorprogramming and execution as causes of RT differences between the firstand the repeat measure group. The experiment is composed of two parts. In the first one, we choose20PE major and17non-PE-major participants in Capital University ofPhysical Education and sports, and in the second one, we choose9non-PE-major participants. In the first part, after the onset of a greenarrow in a white background display, the experimenter asked participantsto respond as quickly and as accurately as they could to identify thedirection of image, using their left index finger on the letter C on thekeyboard to indicate that the arrow upward, and their right index fingeron the letter M to indicate that the arrow downward. In the second partof the experiment, Participants were presented the same stimulus that thefirst part showed. After the participants were trained by playing game, they were presented the same stimulus in a different random order. In the first part of the experiment, PE major participants showedsignificantly slower RTs than did non-PE-major participants. Meanwhile, the analysis of the onset latencies and the amplitude of the S-LRP revealedthat there was no significant difference between PE major and non-PE-majorparticipants. The R-LRP analysis, in contrast, showed that the onsetlatencies and the amplitudes of the R-LRP were significant differencebetween PE major and non-PE-major participants. In the second part of theexperiment, the first measure group showed significantly slower RTs thandid the repeat measure group. The analysis of the onset latencies and theamplitude of the S-LRP revealed that there was no significant differencebetween the first measure group and the repeat measure group. The R-LRP analysis, in contrast, showed that the onset latencies and theamplitudes of the R-LRP were significant difference between the firstmeasure group and the repeat measure group. We used the LRP to discern the origin of slowing in RT to motion onsetthat occurs in non-PE-major individuals. The LRP showed that bulk ofslowed response arose from slowed motor processes, rather than perceptualprocessing. And then the LRP showed that bulk of slowed response of thefirst measure group rose from slowed motor processes, rather thanperceptual processing.
