Abstract


The visual art usually expresses the artwork content through the symbol, and the symbol affects the ways of explaining the visual artworks by audience in long terms. The animation and cartoon character design is based on the visual expression and combines some of the visual symbols together. Through observation and comprehension, people could link the visible visualized factors with the invisible symbols, and read about the personality of the characters. The symbolic content will not pop out until the designer abstracts the true spirits within the character in the design process, then the audience could comprehend the information through the symbols. So, it would be necessary and meaningful to research the symbol content in animation and carton character design, find connections of visual graphics and symbol contents, build some reasonable way of design for the visual art design and the character design.The theme of the article is“The Research of Symbol Content in Animation and Cartoon Character Design”. It is based on the premise of the history, industry and culture factors from the development of animation and cartoon character design, and coordinates the connections of outer representations and inner contents of character design. Then, the discussion follows through the theory of interactive mode of synchronic and diachronic in semeiology, and divides the character into static and dynamic modes. From the two modes, the article discusses the figures, colors and outlines of different kinds of graphic symbols in the static mode, and the transformations of the symbol content in the dynamic mode. Through the research of the transit relations of the two modes, the article offers reasonable methods of animation and cartoon character design and wants to expand the ways of creation and the expression ability of character design.The main accomplishments and innovation parts of this article is listed below:1. Explain the symbol content of animation and cartoon character design through the synchronic and diachronic in semeiology.Based on the special properties of time and space in animation, the article explains the symbol content of animation and cartoon character design through the synchronic and diachronic modes in semeiology.2. Generally coordinate the representation forms of characters in the point view of symbols.3. Offer some reasonable methods of animation and cartoon character design.
