Geochemstry of Rare Earth Elements in Bed-Sediments Distributed at Zhuzhou and Changsha Section of the Xiangjiang River(Hunan Province), China

This study analyzes the rare earth elements and heavy metal elements of Zhuzhou-Changsha river section of the Xiangjiang River using the techniques including the X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (IPC-MS). The results show that the rare earth elements have variable concentrations in all the sediments, and the rare earth elements converge in variation between the content of each sediment column. The REE distribution patterns show the light rare earth elements (LREE) are relatively en-riched, and the heavy rare earth elements (HREE) are deficit, with a distinct negative Eu anomaly for the REE distribution patterns. Source rocks of sediments in the study area mainly from granite upstream and sedimentary rocks of Paleozoic, Mesozoic-Cenozoic. Compared to Changsha river section, Zhuzhou river section shows a relatively complex of rock source information, which probably due to human action (chemical industry, metallurgy, etc).Heavy metals in sediments generally have variable concentrations, such as metals Mn, Cu, Pb and Zn in sediments of Zhuzhou section, and Ba, Cr, Mn, Pb and Zn in that of Changsha section. Comprehensive enrichment coefficient (EI value) displays the sedimentary column of ZX, ZU have completely different characteristics of heavy metal enrichment in Zhuzhou river section, heavy metals in sediments extremely rich in sedimentary column, Pb, Zn and other heavy metals to achieve extreme enrichment. In Zhuzhou, Changsha section of Xiangjiang River, the evaluation of sediment’s enrichment factors of heavy metal pollution (EF) and index of geoaccumulation (Igeo) showed that heavy metal contamination composed of a combination of elements of V, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ba, Pb, Th, U. Compare to Zhuzhou’s sediment to Changsha, Pb,Zn,Cu,etc shows the greater degree of heavy metal pollution. Overall, Zhuzhou heavy metal contamination have more element types, higher pollution levels.The principal component analysis of rare earth elements and heavy metals reveal that Eu and chacopile-siderophile heavy metal elements as a class, both natural and anthropogenic sources in the sediment. Heavy metal enrichment of the more obvious areas more intense negative Eu anomalies, suggesting a negative Eu anomaly in addition to the sediment source rock related, may also be related to human factors. The Pearson correlation analysis of sediment’REE parameters∑REE,8Eu,δCe and index of geoaccumulation (Igeo) shows REE parameters∑REE,δEu,δCe have a certain relationship with heavy metal pollution. The value of sediment’∑REE,δEu and δCe can be used as indication of different heavy metal elements.
