Abstract
The Chinese education police in Malaysia has always emphasized and promoted primary use of Mandarin, and secondary use of English language and Malay language, with the aim of assisting students to master all the three languages. However, due to a lack of conducive environment, the learning and usage of Chinese dialects are much neglected. This damage is further compounded by the nuclear family structure. A study on Chinese family has been conducted in Mantin Village, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia through questionnaires and face to face interviews. The results are gathered to understand the family’s choice of language selection and the current scenario and reasons behind it. In the same vein, I attempted to shed same light from a linguistic point of view, and how a lack of dialect usage would undermine its development, and finally a proposal to overcome the issue.
