Field Experimental Study on Summer Corn Water Consumption and Growths in Beijing

Studies on summer corn water consumption and growth law in Beijing plays an important role in some theoretical and productive issues such as process of water requirement and consumption in summer corn, design of efficient irrigation system for crop. In this paper, summer corn experiment of different irrigation with drip irrigation is conducted. Crop growth index and soil moisture index in the growth period of summer crop are observed, water demand, water consumption and water use efficiency are calculated, the effects of the change of soil moisture and different irrigation water on summer corn growth and yield is analyzed. The main conclusions are:(1) The rainfall, evaporation and soil moisture distribution during summer corn growth period are analyzed, the results show that:soil moisture is consumed mainly in the layer0~60cm. The moisture content of the different treatments storage area is relatively small and distribution of soil moisture profile has little effect by the abundant rainfall.(2) Average soil moisture content of each treatment in the layer0~20cm,20~60cm,60~120cm have fluctuating changes, the difference between each treatment gradually decreases. Soil moisture content is on the decline before and after irrigation and rainfall. According to the change of soil moisture, the layer (0~20cm) is defined as drastic layer; the layer (20~60cm) is defined as rapid layer; the layer (60~120cm) is defined as slowly layer.(3) The ET of summer corn is365.1mm by computing with Penman-Monteith method in this experiment. The ET at different stages of corn is a great difference, the biggest is the stage of filling to mature and the next is the stage of jointing to teaseling. The relation between daily water requirement and time is a parabolic curve.(4) Water consumption of summer corn is estimated with water balance method and the variations of soil moisture with the time analyzed, the results show that:The90%of summer corn consumption under test condition come from rainfall. Soil moisture keep balance between water storage and water supply for the corn growth.(5) The summer corn growth index and yield of each treatment and water use efficiency are analyzed. The results show that:reducing adequately irrigation quantity can improve water use efficiency without yield reduction in wet years. The treatment of30%irrigation quantity save water efficiently. Water consumption is462.8mm and the irrigation is only42.9mm.
