Abstract

Afforestation is an important way to restore degraded ecosystrms in dry-hot Valley ofsouthwestern China. Eucalyptus camaldulensis is planted extensively in dry-hot Valley for itsdrought-tolerant and multi-purposes. Leucaena leucocephala is a fast-growing species that canstrongly ability to improve soil conditions. It is important to establish E.camaldulensis andL.leucocephala plantations for soil and water conservation, soil melioration, regional economyand ecological civilization in dry-hot Valley. To explore the tree growth, biomass allocation, carbon pool and carbon sequestration potential of E.camaldulensis and L.leucocephalaplantations with different afforestation patterns,20-year-old E.camaldulensis andL.leucocephala plantations were investigated using biomass method, E.camaldulensis andL.leucocephala plantations with different plantations ages at various sites were alsoinvestigated. The major conclusions were as follows:(1) The amount biomass of the mixed-species plantation (82.99t·hm–2) was between the E. camaldulensis monoculture plantation (60.64t·hm–2) and L. leucocephala monoculture plantation (127.79t·hm–2). The individual tree biomass of E. camaldulensis in the mixed-species plantation (44.32Kg) was49.83%higher than that in the monoculture plantation (29.58Kg). The aboveground biomass distribution ratio of the L. leucocephala (78.04%) was higher than that in the E. camaldulensis (73.43%) plantation. The proportion of biomass allocated to medium roots, small roots and fine roots (with the exception of coarse roots) of E. camaldulensis in the mixed-species plantation was lowerthan in the monoculture plantation, but the opposite for L. leucocephala.(2) The branch and leaf of the E. camaldulensis monoculture plantation were mainlydistributed at the tree height above3m, and were distributed about2–3m of tree for the L.leucocephala monoculture plantation. For the mixed-species plantation, the distribution wasobvious stratification phenomenon of complementary. The E. camaldulensis were distributed intop of the canopy, and subtop for L. leucocephala. The roots of L. leucocephala were mainly distributed at0–40cm soil layers in both the monoculture and mixed-species plantationswhereas the roots of E. camaldulensis were mainly found at0-80cm and0–60cm in themonoculture and mixed-species plantation, respectively. The ratio of the lateral root of both theE.camaldulensis and L.leucocephala is higher (33.23%–47.22%).(3) The total carbon density of L.leucocephala in the monoculture plantations was largest(151.64T.hm-2), then the mixed-species plantation (97.18T.hm-2), whereas the least in the E.camaldulensis monoculture plantations (85.67T.hm-2). The carbon concernaration of the sameplant in both monoculture and mixed-species plantation was44.15%-46.58%. The soil carbondensity of the L.leucocephala in the monoculture plantations was maximum, and minimum ofthe E. camaldulensis in the monoculture plantations. The carbon densities of the litter layer andsoil of the three plantations were0.55~0.82T.hm-2and56.7~94.66T.hm-2, respectively.(4) Our investigation showed that C densities of all the three types of plantations showeda declining trends with evelation and the maximum was found at the1100m. In general, theC densities at various evelations were as follows: mixed plantation> E. camaldulensis pureplantation> L.leucocephala pure plantation. C densities in the E. camaldulensis pure plantationwere generally declined with slope grades and contrarily in the L.leucocephala pure plantation. The C densities was miximum at15-25slope degrees.(5) The average increment and current annual increment of tree height of both the speciesdeclined with time. DBH of the two species declined during5-10years but increased during10-15years beside E. camaldulensis in the mixed-species plantations, and then all decreased. The carbon density increased fastly during the first20years and the density was2.86-3.06times than the first10years. but increased slowly during the year of20to30, and thenachieved stability. The carbon density of E. camaldulensis in the monoculture plantations couldreach32.51T.hm-2, and72.93T.hm-2to L.leucocephala in the monoculture plantations,45.93T.hm-2for mixed-species plantation after30years.
