As two military powers, both China and Russia have very strong national defense forces, and their weaponry is quite advanced. Besides, the namings of both countries’weaponry are different and unique-each has its own characteristics. The comparison of the weaponry naming between the two countries can not only strengthen understanding of military knowledge, but also deepen the understanding of the significance, the reflected cultural characteristics and ethnic differences. Additionally, it can also increase the interoperability of the two languages and summarize the translation of weaponry names, which provides a theoretical basis for the mutual translation of Sino-Russian weaponry, and greatly improves the efficiency and accuracy of translation, making the translation closer to the idiomatic expressions so as to promote military exchanges and cooperation between the two countries.There are nine primary categories of Sino-Russian weaponry naming, including naming after characters, animals, geographic vocabularies, natural phenomena, military vocabularies, plants, tribes and ethnic groups, design bureaus, manufacturers, and revolutionary vocabularies. The first five are major categories, however naming weaponry after plants, design bureaus, and manufacturers are unique to Russia, while revolutionary vocabularies are specific to China. Comparatively speaking, Russia’s naming of weaponry is richer, and the used terms are strongly evocative; whereas China’s is rather monotonous, but more regular.Through the comparative analysis of Sino-Russian weaponry naming, we can see the naming of weaponry is not randomly created, but obtained on the basis of the weaponry principles, the functions and features, as well as the shapes and modes of operation. The naming of Sino-Russian weaponry has profound psychological foundation and content, which can reflect the emotions of shock and awe, praying for wins, worship, and love. It also has language features such as vividness, subtlety, cleverness, profoundness, and convenience. Furthermore, the naming of Sino-Russian weaponry reflects their ethnic, religious and regional differences.
