Abstract


As one of the representatives of Guan School in Ming Dynasty, MaLi occupies a quite important position in the history of Guan School and Neo-Confucianism. However, MaLi’s direct theories haven’t been sufficiently studied in modern academic vision field; only can be seen in Ph.D. Thesis. So, it is necessary to tidy up some elementary evaluation and positioning of Ma Li’s life information, source of ideas, and thoughts system.There are three parts in this essay.The first part mainly introduces the origin of his thoughts, which include his family tradition, inheritance from teachers, interactions of schoolmates. Also, Mali’s thoughts have to face some contemporary issues, such as restoring the orthodoxy of Confucianism, arguing against the Buddhism and Taoism, the inheritance of Guan School, and solving social crisis.The second part is about introduction about Ma Li’s thought. In his ontology thoughts, Zhu Xi’s views, which can be traced back to the metaphysics basis, are maintained. Also, he developed some Zhang Zai’s theories about universal generation problems. In the theory of mind and nature, Ma Li followed the view of Zhang Zai, who made a distinction between the nature of heaven-earth (Tian Di) and the real nature of human. His view about Heart of Tian Li is similar to Wang Yangming’s point. Ma Li’s achievements in etiquette, indoctrination and rewriting the history books can prove his practical theories.The last part is the confirmation of Ma Li’s ownership and position. Ma Li opposed Buddhism and Taoism firmly and he gave some reasons. From the perspective of interaction with Zhuzi School, Yangming School, Shi School and Guan school, I get a conclusion that the Neo-Confucianism received diversified development in the Ming dynasty. As a representative of Guan School in the Ming dynasty, MaLi presents the trend of diversified interactive and comprehensive development.In the conclusion part, I think that Ma Li has produced important influence in history. What’s more, his moral quality also provides important resources to the establishment of contemporary values.
