Abstract


Achievement motivation has an important impact on the individual’sachievement, the existing researches show that the level of college students′achievement motivation is low, and self-esteem has certain function to predict the levelof students’s achievement motivation. This study assumes that perseverance plays anintermediary role between self-esteem and the level of achievement motivation. Thestudy first designs a questionnaire on college students’ perseverance, then adopts theRosenberg′s self-esteem scale (SES), achievement motivation scale (AMS) and theperseverance questionnaire by the author to survey650college students from fouruniversities in Chengdu. Based on the previous studies, this study is to explore therelationship among self-esteem, perseverance and achievement motivation.The results of the study show that:(1)The college students’ perseverance questionnaire includes three factors:learning persistence, exercise adherence and hope, and17items. The questionnairedesigned is of good reliability、validity, and it can be used as a suitable tool tomeasure college students’ perseverance level.(2)College students have a higher level of self-esteem. Their self-esteem levelhas no significant difference in gender, grade, profession, and father’s cultural degree;but it has significate differences in the economic conditions and mother’s culturaldegree。(3)College students have a medium level of perseverance and a lower lever ofexercise adherence. The level of perseverance has significant differences in familyeconomic conditions and father’s cultural degree.(4)College students have a lower level of achievement motivation.Achievementmotivation has no significant difference in gender,profession,grade,family economic conditions, parents cultural degree.(5)There are significant positive correlation among college students’ self-esteem,perseverance and achievement motivation.(6)Perseverance has partial intermediary effect between self-esteem andachievement motivation. College students’ self-esteem can be used to predict the levelof their achievement motivation, and perseverance can be used to predict theirachievement motivation level. Self-esteem can predict achievement motivation leveldirectly, and also can predict achievement motivation by perseverance indirectly.
