Abstract

Global warming is the single most important environmental issue facing humanity today, as well as one of the greatest challenges international community faces in the era of globalization. China, with one of the world’s biggest environments, ranks at the forefront of population expansion and economic growth rate. With the current economic growth rate and carbon dioxide emissions, China’s greenhouse gas emissions will surpass that of the United States to become the world’s leading polluter in 2009. China thus faces serious challenges and great pressure for reduction. Therefore, the international community is paying increasing attention to China’s stance on global warming. While the issue of climate change appears to be only an environmental problem, in fact it entails complex political and economic issues. At present, with the global warming crisis deepening, the major powers of the environment and development affairs increasingly use the international arena to stage battle for leadership and demonstrate their influence.China is one of the countries most affected by global warming. Since the reform and opening up of its policies, China’s rapid development allowed an increased ability to transform nature like never before. Access to resources has helped to create great material wealth, as well as to promote the development of civilization, thus rapidly increasing the living standards of the people. At the same time, however, it accelerated the depletion and degradation of the natural environment, the "extensive" model of development resulting in great pollution. This has contributed to China’s negative international image. The only way out is to explore a way that will not only take into account China’s specific conditions, but also respect the world’s requirements, thus promoting a collaborative and harmonious relationship among nations as well as between humans and nature. The first part of this dissertation reviews the issue of global warming and highlights the explorations of the scientific community. Then, in the second part, I expound political implications of climate change and challenges it presents for China. The third part offers analysis of China’s domestic and international response to global warming, with a particular focus on China’s diplomatic transformation. Finally, there are some recommendations offered in the concluding part. Hopefully, the analysis presented in this dissertation will be helpful in understanding how China, through the domestic and international actions, is responding to challenges posed by global warming, and how in the process the Chinese diplomacy is transforming and maturing.
