Abstract


With the development of children’s social status, children’s literature, which is created for children on purpose, is much concerned. Many scholars are devoted in relative research about children’s literature, especially its English-Chinese translation. However, most studies are focused on detailed and fine points rather than comprehensive and systematic discussion. Therefore, this thesis aims to discuss specific historical stylistic features of English-Chinese translation of children’s literature by means of stylistic analysis from aspects of phonological level, lexical level, syntactical level and graphological level diachronically, attempts to obtain stylistic evolution in English-Chinese translation of children’s literature, and then provides certain translating suggestions according to stylistic features and evolution of children’s literature translation.This dissertation consists of six chapters.Chapter one is a brief introduction to this thesis which mainly analyzes the status of children’s literature and its translation in literary polysystem, relative literature review, and necessity or significance of this paper.Chapter two is a study of children’s literature, which identifies definitions of children’s literature, analyzes its classification, and presents its functions.Chapter three is composed of three parts: status of English-Chinese translation of children’s literature, its significance and its specific historical development through quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis. Approximately, historical development of English-Chinese translation of children’s literature can be divided into five periods: period of Late Qing Dynasty, period of May Fourth Movement, period from 1927 to 1965, period of the Cultural Revolution and period from 1977 till now. Chapter four deals with the theoretic framework of this thesis including definition of style, basic theory of stylistics and four levels of stylistic analysis from linguistic perspective: phonological level, lexical level, syntactical level and graphological level. In addition, this chapter will discuss concrete features of children’s literature translation combined with the basis of stylistic theory.Chapter five is the core of this dissertation. This chapter is mainly devoted to the application of stylistic theory to English-Chinese translation of children’s literature in different historical periods from stylistic aspects such as phonological level, lexical level, syntactical level and graphological level in detail and in system, so as to conclude distinguished stylistic characteristics and stylistic evolution of English-Chinese translation of children’s literature and provide suitable translating strategies on the basis of analysis of stylistic evolution. Necessary materials are Gulliver’s Travels (1906) translated by Lin Shu during the period of Late Qing Dynasty, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1922) translated by Zhao Yuanren during the period of May Fourth Movement, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1959) translated by Chang Jian and Zhang Zhenxian during the period from 1927 to 1965, and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (republication) (2002) translated by Zhao Yuanren during the period from 1977 till now.Chapter six concludes the whole dissertation summarizing stylistic evolution in English-Chinese translation of children’s literature. Meanwhile, certain translating suggestions according to stylistic features and evolution in children’s literature translation are given in order to promote the development of children’s literature translation.
