With economic globalization, Chinese economy has made great progress and the standard of living has been greatly improved, so people are increasingly pursuing products and high level of diversification, the new product often appears to make our life of convenient. And cosmetics, because of its function, more and more consumers, especially female consumers pay attention. To understand the cosmetics, consumers need to understand the cosmetics instruction. Therefore, more and more cosmetics instructions appears in the media and cosmetics packaging, So more and more people are aware of it as a special genreIn this paper, we use Halliday’s Functional Grammar theory, look for cosmetics packaging and all brands of cosmetics to analyze more than thirty cosmetics instructions. At first, summarize previous studies, then analyze the characteristics of language, then apply functional grammar, from a cultural context, situational context, and three language metafunctions, and use the quantitative analysis to draw up language cosmetics linguistic features.This paper found that cosmetics instructions often appear in the media and cosmetics packaging, there are many elliptical sentences and imperative sentences in the cosmetics instructions. The language is beautiful and professional, and it often have word structures of the extraordinary matches, have their own genre and structure, and in the three metafunctions analysis, the transitive system often appears, and make the cosmetics instructions descriptive, relational processes and mental process rarely occurs. Indicative mood is often used, questions and exclamatory sentences appears occasionally, modal verbs seldom appears, more medium-modal words is used, generally the cosmetics instructions use simple theme.This study shows that: Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar is a very effective means in discourse analysis. But we also need Systemic Functional Grammar in discourse analysis, select the appropriate language forms to guide the writing of cosmetics instructions, help achieve the purpose of effective communication, I hope this analysis of cosmetics manufacturers and consumers have certain practical influence.
