Correlation between Expression of VCAM-1 and TAM Infiltration in Epithelial Ovarian Carcinoma

Abstract


Objective To investigate the expression of vascular cell adhesion molecule-l(VCAM-l)and tumor-associated macrophages(TAM)with angiogenesis in epithelial ovarian carcinoma and the correlation between expression of VCAM-1 and TAM in epithelial ovarian carcinoma and clinic pathological parameters.Methods Using immunohistochemical method, the expression of VCAM-1 and CD68(a marker of TAM) were examined in 40 samples of epithelial ovarian carcinoma ,20 samples in benign ovarian tumor and 12 normal ovarian cases, micro vessel density(MVD) was counted by endothelial cells immunostained using monoclonal antibody CD34; The TAM counts and the MVD counts were detected by HMIAS-2000 image analysis system.Results The positive rate of VCAM-1 and the TAM counts in epithelial ovarian carcinoma were higher than those in benign ovarian tumor and normal cases(P < 0.01); The TAM counts and the MVD counts in the cases of the positive expression of VCAM-1 were higher than those in the cases of the negative expression of VCAM-1(t=5.656,P<0.01; t=5.198,P < 0.01) ; The counts of TAM waspositively correlated with MVD(r=0.746 ,P < 0.01);The positive rate ofVCAM-1 and the TAM counts in stageIII～IV, gradeIIIand the casescombined with lymphatic metastasis were higher than those in stageI—II ,grade I and II ,and the cases without lymphatic metastasis (P< 0.01,P < 0.01,and P < 0.01,respectively).Conclusion VCAM-1 and TAM probably cooperate in tumor angiogenesis in epithelial ovarian carcinoma, and enhance metastasis in epithelial ovarian carcinoma.
