Abstract

Cloze concern as the design, implementation and evaluation of the test means an easy theory began in Gestalt psychology school Gestalt principles. Although the Cloze designed for students of English as a native language, but it is the applications come from behind in second language testing. Type Gestalt questions derivative changes constantly in the process of language testing practice, given by the first pitch delete the word to the reasonable deleted the word and the integration of the choice Questions, all reflect the designer as much as possible to exclude various subjective factors accurately reflect the candidate's language level of effort. Cloze - especially reasonable deleted form of word choice - is still widely used in the English test practice but targeted Gestalt test is a serious shortage of empirical studies (Li Xiaoju, 1997; Mao Yansheng, ZHANG Jian-li, 2008). In addition, a large-scale questionnaire (Yu Wei Shen, 2005), more than half to 52.1% of the students think that is too difficult Cloze being questioned its validity. Based on this fact, the study selected from reasonable deleted word Cloze question of design, the effects of several variables that may affect Cloze difficulty: the choice of the type of the chapter, the default knowledge areas and parts of speech selected. This study measured survey of 44 non-English majors Gestalt test performance and their actual English proficiency, correlation analysis and single-factor analysis of variance of the data collected using the SPSS 11.5 statistical software to test more variable test difficulty. The main results and findings are as follows: 1. Types of discourse finished selecting shaped a certain narrative class discourse easy Discourse Description significantly higher than the other two modes. 2 different knowledge areas, has also affected the difficulty of Gestalt test. Taking into account the the discourse level restrictions classification inadequate (Brown, 1989), this article is defined as knowledge spaces examined vocabulary, syntax, and discourse with four aspects. Correlation analysis, we found that with the knowledge (.605), vocabulary knowledge (.513) and grammar (.416) have a strong correlation with students' English proficiency, and discourse knowledge (.317) than weak. Gestalt scores of students compared the results reflect the vocabulary knowledge Gestalt biggest obstacle, the most difficult. In addition, the data analysis from the side answered and Gestalt measure what this vexed issue and prove Gestalt measurement with the knowledge of effective tools. 3 part-of-speech analysis found that grade point average is not much difference, the distribution of content words of a greater degree of dispersion, and the statistics show that the content words (M = 25.53) than function words (M = 28.85) is more difficult. The results are consistent with this outcome with early Gestalt research, so the content words are more difficult to open Gestalt and select the type of Gestalt project. We speculate that this may function words discourse closed parts of speech and thus greater redundancy relations. The classic difficulty theory difficulty factor is a reasonably acceptable range from .30 to .70, but the analysis found that 40% of the project difficulty factor beyond this range. Therefore, the purpose of a single project, Gestalt test still needs further improvement, this may also be the reason for student dissatisfaction with the kinds of questions.
