Abstract


This paper points out that wars affect and promote literature on the basis of the description of the relationship between wars and literature and that literature is the reflection on and of wars. This paper also compares the characteristics and evolution of American literature before and after the Second World War. It analyzes main schools of literature after the Second World War. During the American history of a little more than two hundred years, the development of the American literature coincided with that of the American history. Literature is witness of epoch and history. It reflects human life. Looking back on American history, we can find that each significant historical incident, especially the Second World War, had a massive influence on literature.American traditional literature mainly reflects a deep-rooted optimistic spirit. Hard working, optimism, "American Dream" can be found in every piece of work. Writers represented by Washington Irving, Walt Whitman give vivid description of American nature, praise peaceful work and the relationship between people, and express their expectation of a better future; in fact, they praise the vigorously developing society, and express American dream of democracy and freedom. From 1914 to 1945 the enthusiastic American young people went to fight with their dreams and beliefs, facing the massacre and death, the feeling of being cheated made them disillusioned from the "American Dream", and caused "the Lost Generation" represented by Hemingway and Fitzgerald to come into being. The Second World War brought destruction into American Society. It altered people’s life style, broke down their own faith and notion and had an impact on conventional moral code. The universal social phenomena such as pessimism, nervous breakdown and crisis of belief lasted a rather long period in American society. So "the Beat Generation", "Confession", "Montenegro" and "Absurdist" and "Black Humor" were immersed in America. The writers put aside traditional technique of writing and expressed an escape from reality with absurd and messy writing style. At the same time they gave vent to dissatisfaction with society in pessimism and decadent way.Through the study of the post-war writers and their works, this paper mainly discusses the influence of the Second World War on American literature. This will be helpful for arousing in people hatred for wars and love for peace. Through contrast and comparison, we will understand the writer better, study American literature and know American further.
