Abstract


In the 1970s, Cooperative Learning (CL) was a popular educational approach in the U.S. Today, as a theoretical and strategic system, it has been widely applied in many countries, for it can change the dull class atmosphere under traditional ways of English teaching, and enhance students’learning ability effectively. In the secondary vocational school, the aims of English education are to cultivate students to be independent, and improve their competence to use English and communicate, while CL can help meet all these needs, for it can accelerate students’personality and group-work spirit development and improve their oral achievement. This study aims at testifying the effects of oral English teaching on CL in secondary vocational school.The author conducted an empirical study by using contrastive analysis. The following questions are addressed in the study:(1) Can CL improve students’English oral achievement effectively If so, to what extend(2) What are the students’attitudes towards CL WhyThe subjects of the study were from two classes of secondary vocational school enrolled in 2009 in Suzhou, and were divided into one experimental group, who were exposed to CL instruction, and the controlled group that received traditional instruction. Before the experiment, the two classes took the oral test of Level Two of Public English Test System in September, 2010. After collecting the data of the test, the author analyzed the data by using SPSS 17.0, which shows that there is no significant difference between the two classes. After the experiment, students of the two classes took the oral test of PETS-2 in March, 2011. The subjects in the experimental class completed a questionnaire after the experiment about their attitudes towards CL. After the analysis and study, some major findings are summarized as follows:(1) The students of the experimental group have made greater progress in English speaking than the students of the controlled group, and have done well in the post-test. The passing rate of the experimental class was 35% higher than that of the controlled class, and the excellent rate is 37.5% higher.(2) CL is popular with most of the students. Meanwhile, CL can create more comfortable atmosphere for students, in which their interests and motivation are stimulated considerably and the learners’communicative ability is elevated obviously. The study arrives at a conclusion on the basis of the research that CL is an effective approach in secondary vocational oral English teaching. However, in the process of carrying out CL, some challenges and problems arising from the application need to be further considered and resolved.
